Dr. Vanda Torous, Chair of the ASC Cytopathology Program Directors Committee, interviews Dr. Sara Monaco and Dr. Armando Filie on their experiences with instituting progressive responsibility in their training programs in this episode of our series Cytopathology Program Director Toolkit.
Dr. Monaco is a Professor of Pathology at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and the Program Director of the Geisinger Cytopathology Fellowship Program. She is on the executive board of the ASC and an associate editor of JASC. She has served on numerous ASC committees including serving most recently as the Chair of the Program Director committee and having spearheaded many initiatives in that role including the Unified Timeline for fellowship recruitment.
Dr. Filie has been a faculty at the residency program in anatomic pathology and the fellowship program in cytopathology since he joined the Laboratory of Pathology at the National Cancer Institute, in 1996, and currently also serves as the director of the cytopathology fellowship training program at the Laboratory of Pathology, National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Vanda Torous, Chair of the ASC Cytopathology Program Directors Committee, interviews Dr. Kim Ely and Dr. Rema Rao on their experiences with promoting wellness in their training programs in this episode of our series Cytopathology Program Director Toolkit.
Dr. Ely is an Associate Professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt Medical Center where she serves as Medical Director of Cytopathology and Director of the Cytopathology Fellowship Program. She is also a surgical pathologist with an emphasis in head and neck. She has been a member of the Cytopathology Program Directors Committee of the ASC since 2019. She is also a member of her pathology department’s wellness committee.
Dr. Rema Rao is a staff pathologist at the Montefiore Medical Center and associate professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She has worked closely with trainees and in trainee wellness in particular as an associate residency program director at Cornell and most recently as the fellowship director at the Montefiore Medical Center. She is also a member of the ASC program director committee.

Dr. Vanda Torous, Chair of the ASC Cytopathology Program Directors Committee, interviews Dr. Diva R. Salomao on her experience with trainee evaluations including collecting and administering feedback.
Dr. Salomao is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where she has served as the cytopathology program director for the past four years. In addition to pathology, she is also a member of the Ophthalmology department at Mayo. She has special interests in neoplasms of the eye and ocular adnexa in addition to fine needle aspiration biopsy. She is a member of the ASC cytopathology fellowship program director committee.

Dr. Vanda Torous, Chair of the ASC Cytopathology Program Directors Committee, interviews Dr. Kamal Khurana and Dr. Cecilia Gimenez on their experiences incorporating ROSE into their training programs including telecytology in this episode of our series Cytopathology Program Director Toolkit.
Dr. Gimenez is an anatomic and clinical pathologist at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Northwell Health. Since 2017, she has been their cytopathology fellowship director. Her areas of interest include medical education, cytopathology and ultrasound-guided FNA training. She was on the ASC Program Director Committee for 2 years and is currently on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
Dr. Khurana is a professor of pathology and medicine and Director of Cytopathology at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse NY. His interests and areas of focus include interventional cytopathology and gynecologic pathology. He was on the ASC Program Director Committee for multiple terms, about 8 years in total.

Cytopathology Program Director Toolkit: Performance of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsies
Dr. Vanda Torous, Chair of the ASC Cytopathology Program Directors Committee, interviews Dr. Elham Khanafshar on her experience incorporating the performance of fine needle aspirational biopsies into cytopathology training.
Dr. Khanafshar is currently a Professor of Pathology, Director of Cytopathology and Medical Director of FNA Clinic at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Khanafshar was also the program director of the UCSF cytopathology fellowship program from 2012-2020, during which time she implemented a boot camp rotation for the fellows with a focus on teaching interventional cytopathology. She has served on numerous professional organization committees and was a member of the ASC program director committee for two years. Dr. Khanafshar is a dedicated teacher and has contributed significant to the fields of cytopathology and thyroid pathology.
